Roots
Urban Sanctuary is a surprising mix of the old and the new. Born of an experiment between Silicon Valley Progressive Faith Community, a newly organized young church in downtown San Jose, and First Christian Church in its 150th year, the two found new life together.
With roots in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ, we value unity, inclusivity, and do our best to practice radical hospitality.
We are an Open and Affirming congregation welcoming people regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, economic class, race, or the certainty of their beliefs. We are ordinary people seeking to follow God in these turbulent times.

Spirituality wasn’t meant to be practiced alone. We value the relationships and partnerships that make our mission and ministries stronger. Urban Sanctuary is connected to:
- People Acting in Community Together (PACT) – a network of multi-faith community builders empowering everyday people to create a more healthy and just society.
- Open and Affirming Ministries proudly working to welcome LGBTQ people into churches.
- The National Benevolent Association’s Incubate Initiative which encourages and supports the development of new and innovative social service ministries by Disciples.
