February is Black History Month so we’ll celebrate it in Spiritual Poetry with some incredible poems by some masterful Black poets. Here goes:
- “Kids Who Die” by Langston Hughes. Solidarity is the real superpower and this could almost be called “Ode to Solidarity.” It is amazing how many wonderful poems Hughes wrote and we’ll check out at least one other before this month is over.
- “Churchgoing” by Marilyn Nelson. Every poem I read by Ms. Nelson is terrific and this one is no exception. Growing up as a Lutheran I can attest that her opening description of a Lutheran church service is consistent with what I experienced. But she has a bigger target in mind and we’ll have fun exploring it together.
- “Mimesis” by Fady Joudah. Let’s end with a short, powerful poem by a Palestinian-American poet highlighting how a child’s view of a situation can radically change our perception of it.
