Pastor’s Message

It just keeps coming. In the course of a week, we read about the surprising loss of water from the usual snowpack sources in the Sierra, which just didn’t make it downstream this year. Followed by astonishing temperatures in the Pacific Northwest.

Some days I just want to stop reading, and listening to the news, it’s too much. Maybe for a while, that helps. But we know that in the long run, we must find another way.

We talk a lot about the relationship between spirituality and activism at Urban Sanctuary. The words of Gordon Cosby remind us that “contrary to what we have thought, contemplatives are the great doers.” Prayer and meditation can transform the way we hold and respond to such news.

Throughout July we’ll be sharing some of the integrative practices and reflections from Joanna Macy’s four decades of work related to deep ecology, called “The Work That Reconnects.” It’s not a magic solution to make us feel better, but it is a beautiful, life-giving path where we can join together and support each other as we hold and respond to the challenges of our time.

Blessings,

Pastor Dana
