Jim Thompson’s Spiritual Poetry

September 2, 2020 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

This week I have am sharing some stuff I absolutely love:

  • “Her Monologue of Dark Crepe with Edges of Light” by Norman Dubie. This is an older poem and my friend who introduced it to me told me Dubie might not feel comfortable publishing it today. There would be a bit of controversy about it and we’ll talk about that as well. Trust me, this poem is worth spending some time with.
  • “Is This Thing Working?” by Todd Snyder. I got to see Todd Snyder in person in Santa Cruz a while back and it was an incredible experience. You can watch him sing “Is This Thing Working?” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7jGLNZkZJ8   If you do, please see if you can find the extra line he adds that isn’t in the lyrics. I think it actually works better with the extra line, but then I’m not the poet!
  • “The Back Country” by Louis Jenkins; This is a fun one and if you want to hear actor Mark Rylance recite it in an unusual setting, it is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TU9iCgGDjRI
